Centre for Global Wood Security

I am a PhD student at the University of Sheffield supervised by Prof. David Edwards. Mineral extraction is expanding at an unprecedented rate, and my research investigates extractive industries and their ecological threat to biodiversity hotspots and forest landscapes at global scale. Mining drives dramatic land-use change within biodiversity hotspots causing deforestation at both the mine footprint and within the surrounding landscape. Infrastructure developments for mines open formerly remote landscapes to increased risk of forest loss and degradation. My research is mainly focused on addressing where are the hotspots of ecological risk from mining? How do commodities differ in their risk to ecosystems? How can extractive industries supply minerals for a just energy transition whilst avoiding severe ecological damage? What are the ecological risks of under researched construction minerals?
