I am a Professor of Tropical Ecology based at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. I lead the Tropical Rainforest Ecology Lab (TREcoL) and am co-founder of the Tropical Forest Arena (TFA) – an open arena for exchange of information and debates on issues related to tropical forests. I have worked extensively in the Brazilian Amazon for more than 25 years, but also work in other Amazonian countries and in Africa and Asia.
My interests in tropical forest ecology and conservation are broad and research includes studies of above-ground biomass and carbon stocks, biodiversity and survey methods, ecology and seasonality of Amazonian floodplain forests, ecology and management of non-timber forest resources, impacts of land-use change on biodiversity, plant-animal interactions, and animal movements. I currently lead what is arguably the largest ever systematic biodiversity sampling effort by a single project in the Amazon – the Amazon Biodiversity and Carbon Expeditions (ABC Expeditions).
