Centre for Global Wood Security

My work is broadly based across forest sciences, social sciences, management and policy. I research the ecology, management and ecosystem services of forests and agroforestry systems. Key themes include the role in the global carbon cycle of forests and their wood products, climate change and pathogen impacts on forests, biodiversity conservation at species, site and landscape scales, including the impact of invasive species, drivers of forest degradation, the ecological basis of forest restoration, and the role of culture in the resilience of socio-ecological systems.  Research on agroforestry includes its role in livelihoods and mitigating deforestation and climate change.

Relevance to sustainable forest management and policy has been a major motivation of my recent research, including the contribution of afforestation to climate change mitigation, the importance of circular wood use for global decarbonisation, forest growth responses to climate change, and the effect of forest management on resilience.  This has led me into a number of government, NGO and private sector advisory roles.
