As a PhD candidate at Wageningen University, I work on forest monitoring using (radar) remote sensing. I am supervised by Johannes Reiche, Marielos Peña-Claros and Martin Herold. My research explores the potential of Sentinel-1 C-band radar to monitor fine-scale natural and logging-related tropical forest disturbance patterns and associated carbon loss. My work on improved fine-scale disturbance detection using radar shadow opens up opportunities to study patterns of logging and natural disturbance that could previously not be analysed at large scales and over time. This supports the enforcement of policies aimed at curbing forest degradation, fosters management and certification in logging concessions, and provides opportunities for improved forest monitoring in both natural and logged landscapes.

With an interdisciplinary background in Governance, Economics and Development, I am convinced that we need to utilize the complementary strengths of various research fields to address environmental challenges while appreciating related dilemmas regarding justice, diversity, prosperity and equality.
